“I was extremely influenced in my own work by modernism. As a young man at the Slade and in Argentina I thrashed about a lot and was very much in the pervasive shadow of Picasso, stylising in a late Cubist way; I lectured about Abstract Expressionism in 1958 and painted abstracts a la Nicholas de Stael,  probably because they were easy, and later I made some neo-Dada objects which were as enigmatic as I could devise. I’ve always felt free to be artistically promiscuous.”
